Brunel's Swing Bridge Project News - 2021

The appearance of the site was transformed at the first work party of the year, which was a well-attended event.

The grafitti artists had taken full advantage of the long absence of work parties, and both sides of the bridge were improved visually by a repaint. The pit covers were lifted and the 1 tonne hydraulic ram was raised so that the base holes could be reamed out at the next work party. A group removed the weeds that had been growing around the site.

More of the graffiti on the surrounding area was painted over, and the photo on the right shows a couple of younger volunteers at work. In the ram pit a broken flange on the ram was repaired and the ram was then replaced in its normal position. A small team worked on this using blocks and a jacking gantry.

July 2021

The last of the graffiti on the near-by Plimsol Bridge was painted over, at least until the skellums return. At one point a brillo pad was used in an attempt to remove the paint.

Photos of the work party can be found on the 2021 photo page.

August 2021

Volunteer numbers were down as the work party fell on a Bank Holiday weekend, but half a dozen 'faithfuls' worked on reassembly work in the south ram pit and cleared weeds from around the site. Two large tree roots were removed from the masonry around Jessop's early 19th Century lock as they were threatening the stability of the masonry.

Photos of the work party can be found on the 2021 photo page.
